Indonesia is the third largest producer of coffee in the world. It consists of more than 17,000 islands, and coffee is grown on many of them. Everyone is unique in their climate or soil quality. The slightly weathered volcanic surface of the Indonesian archipelago provides the most fertile soil for growing coffee trees. The Dutch imported coffee to Indonesia and the island of Java around 1696. The plantation coffee has since been grown on the plateau around Mount Kawah Ijen at an altitude of about 1,300 meters above sea level. Coffee from Indonesia varies by region, but mostly has a balanced spicy taste with mild acidity and chocolate tones. All coffees are collected here only by hand.
